Celebrating Superstar of STEM Dr Vanessa Pirotta, Winner of Eureka Prize

IMG_Vanessa_Pirotta

Science & Technology Australia is thrilled to celebrate Dr Vanessa Pirotta, a 2021 Superstar of STEM, and mentor in our 2025 cohort, who this week won the prestigious Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science.

A wildlife scientist, communicator, and author, Vanessa’s pioneering work spans from drones that collect whale snot, to harnessing AI to fight illegal wildlife trafficking. She is also the lead scientist of the Wild Sydney Harbour program, combining First Nations Knowledge and scientific research to deepen understanding of marine life.

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Vanessa reflected on her journey as a scientist, communicator, and woman in STEM.

“When I finished my PhD I was told that ‘you women go off and have your children, and that’s it.’ No. It’s an important part to be here standing and sharing science because we need to be there for that next generation.”

Vanessa’s passion for making science accessible continues to inspire – congratulations Vanessa on this incredible recognition.
