Nominations open: Join an STA Committee or the new Friends of the Chair initiative.

Science & Technology Australia is calling for nominations to join our board committees; the Policy Committee, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, or you can apply for our new initiative, Friends of the Chair.

These are permanent committees of the STA Board. Committee terms are for two years.

To be eligible, you must be a member of, or employed by, an STA member organisation.

We strongly encourage nominations from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, LGBTQIA+ people, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Email your application to info@sta.org.au by 15 June 2025. Please indicate in the email subject which committee you are applying for.

Policy

The Policy Committee support STA’s leadership to respond to policy issues and develop advocacy strategy, by engaging with STA’s membership to reflect the needs of the STEM sector; responding to inquiries, reviews and consultations; and contributing STA’s proactive STEM sector policy agenda.

To apply please provide a brief biography (200 words approx.) and address the following questions in a statement that is no more than two pages:

  1. What boards and committee roles have you held previously?
  2. Describe your experience in delivering a STEM-related strategy.
  3. How would your skills and attributes help STA bridge the gap between science and policy?
  4. What do you want to achieve for science and technology in Australia?
  5. Please state your STA member organisation and confirm that this organisation is aware of your application.

The Policy Committee meets monthly. Please view the Terms of Reference and STA Constitution before applying.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee advises the STA Board on strategic issues of EDI in the STEM sector, including STA’s own policies and practices and contributes to the delivery of STA’s Reconciliation Action Plan commitments.

Please submit a brief biography (approx. 200 words) and address the following questions in a statement of no more than two pages:

  1. What is your perspective on equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM?
(Please also indicate if you identify as a member of an under-represented group.)
  2. What do you hope to achieve as a member of this committee? What does success look like to you?
  3. What is your relevant committee, board and/or EDI experience?
  4. Please state your STA member organisation and confirm that this organisation is aware of your application.

The EDI Committee meets approximately four times a year. Please view the Terms of Reference and STA Constitution before applying.

Friends of the Chair

Friends of the Chair is a new pathway for people with little or no committee experience to get involved with STA’s board committees.

This stream is open to early-career or less-experienced professionals in STA member organisations who want to learn, contribute fresh ideas, and build networks to the committees currently open for nominations (Policy and EDI).

Friends of the Chair participants will be invited to attend Committee meetings in a contributor capacity.

To apply, please submit:

  1. A short biography (approx. 200 words)
  2. A one-page expression of interest describing your interest in the role, what you hope to gain, and your STA member organisation.
