My name is Dr Bonnie Quigley and what I do is look at the biology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I work with many kinds of medical doctors, academic researchers and community members, because there are many ways to experience trauma and it’s important to have many points of view if we are going to understand how trauma affects each of us. Interesting research I’ve done includes determining what proteins change in our bodies when people are experiencing PTSD symptoms and how those proteins change when treatments work and people feel better. A career highlight for me was finding that one important protein involved in PTSD (brain-derived neurotrophic factor or BDNF) appears to be a “goldilocks” protein – it can’t be too low or too high, it needs to be just right - and that everyone’s “just right” is unique to them. The most satisfying part of my work is helping people understand that their mental health isn’t “all in their head” – it’s in their body, too!
