We know that Earth's climate is warming due to human activities. What is still much less clear is how aspects of Earth's climate other than temperature are changing. This includes the sort of things that strongly affect our daily lives-like when and how much it rains throughout the year, as well as extreme events like droughts and floods.
Dr Georgy Falster is a climate scientist who wants to know exactly how Australia's climate is changing. She is particularly interested in how climate change is affecting Australian rainfall and extremes. To figure this out, she combines information from weather observations, climate model simulations, and natural archives of past climate variability such as tree rings and ice cores-known as 'palaeoclimate proxies'. Together, these sources of information allow her to make holistic assessments of Australian climate variability and how it is changing.
When she isn't in the lab or at her computer, Georgy has a lot of interests to keep her busy. These range from playing the guitar and writing poetry about her research to trail running, sea swimming, and educating people about alpine climate change on the chairlifts of Australia's ski resorts.
