Dr Laura Navone
Start-up R&D DirectorEden Brew
As a Synthetic Biologist, I am an advocate for shaping our industries into more sustainable ones harnessing the power of nature and building with biology. I believe that moving from linear 'take-make-waste' use of resources to circular 'reuse-repurpose-recycle' economies that regenerate nature, requires engagement from all societal sectors, linking industries with science while considering community needs.
I contribute to sustainable industries and circular economies through my specialisation in protein production and precision fermentation. My current role is Research and Development Director at Eden Brew, a start-up company on a mission to create animal-free dairy products using microbial fermentation to meet the global protein food demand.
Prior to this role, I was a QUT-CSIRO Synthetic Biology FSP Fellow developing cell-based biosensors to select improved yeast strains for industrial protein production.
I started my career at Universidad Nacional de Rosario, Argentina, completing a Bachelors and Masters in Biotechnology and PhD in Molecular Biology. In 2014, I moved to Australia to undertake research at UQ and later at QUT, Brisbane. During these years, I led a variety of industry focussed projects including metabolite production in microbial systems, enzyme technologies and recycling and functionalisation of textiles for greener industrial practices.
