Synthetic BiologistARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology
Did you know that current industrial systems waste over 90% of raw materials before a product even reaches the shelf? It is like buying a full bag of groceries and throwing everything away except one apple! A massive inefficiency that the planet cannot afford. The good news is that industries are increasingly turning away from this "take-make-waste" model. Synthetic biology is rising to the challenge, offering innovative ways to engineer enzymes and microbes that convert waste into value.
Dr Laura Navone is a Synthetic Biologist at the forefront of this transition, bridging the gap between science and sustainability, helping organizations leverage circular biotechnology to redesign the future. Laura collaborates with partners across academia and the private sector to translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world applications. Her portfolio illustrates the power of engineering biology for the circular economy. Laura has worked on pioneering projects including sustainable wool recycling technologies, virus-resistant textiles, animal-free dairy products, and enzymatic solutions for livestock, including a shampoo for cows!
Laura holds a PhD in Molecular Biology (2014) and serves as an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology. Previously, she advocated for the next generation of leaders on the Executive Committee of Synthetic Biology Australasia (SBA).
After a decade in academia, Laura transitioned into the dynamic world of biotech startups, one of the most rewarding chapters of her career. Now, she applies her expertise to help organisations tackle complex challenges, navigating biotechnological solutions that deliver tangible outcomes for industry, society, and the planet.
