Dr Liz Reed

Vertebrate palaeontologist

The University of Adelaide

Did you know that fossils can tell us about the past, present and future?

Vertebrate palaeontologist Dr Liz Reed uses evidence from fossil deposits in caves to reconstruct past biodiversity. Caves accumulate a wealth of materials that tell us about past environments, including a rich fossil record of vertebrate faunas. By studying how animal and plant communities responded to changes in climate and environment in the past, Liz can assess how current and future change will impact the conservation of Australia's threatened species and habitats.

Much of her research centres on the World Heritage Naracoorte Caves. Liz first visited the caves as an undergrad, and it was literally 'love at first cave'. She never dreamed that many years later she'd be leading her own research group and still making new discoveries. She feels privileged to work with some inspiring women in STEM, especially a team of postgraduate researchers who share her passion for caves and palaeontology.

Liz received her PhD in Vertebrate Palaeontology from Flinders University in 2004. Since then she has worked as an academic, researcher and museum scientist. Liz is currently a Senior Lecturer at University of Adelaide in the School of Biological Sciences.
