MAWA’s aim is to advance medical science and improve human health and therapeutic interventions without using animals or animal products in medical research. MAWA has taken a leading role in animal-free science by providing funding to universities and research institutions throughout Australia and working cooperatively and productively with the scientific research community to facilitate the development and promotion of human-relevant alternative methods. MAWA provides research and development grants, travel grants, equipment grants, fellowships, a range of scholarships, conference bursaries, support for tissue banks, alternatives training courses, significant seminars and conferences and sponsorships. MAWA also facilitates third-party funding for these initiatives to increase opportunities for researchers and students. MAWA works in partnership with the Australian National University (ANU) and has established the Replacing Animals in Medical Research Fund (RAMR) at the ANU.
