Nikki Keighran
Radiation Protection AdvisorAustralian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation
Ever wondered how nuclear medicine technicians prepare radiotherapy drugs without exposing themselves to harmful radiation? Or how much radiation a nuclear reactor operator is actually exposed to during their work?
These are the kinds of questions Nikki explores as part of the Radiation Protection team at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Her role involves advising and training others on how to manage and minimise radiation exposure, protecting both people and the environment. She’s passionate about making radiation protection practical and accessible, using clear, reliable science to support confident, informed work practices and to demystify nuclear safety.
Her career has also included roles in crime scene examination, nuclear forensics and engineering analytical instrumentation, reflecting on how diverse and rewarding a career in science can be. Nikki’s work has taken her across Asia, America, and Europe, including a highlight role with the London 2012 Olympics Anti-Doping Team.
Raised in a rural community, Nikki has a strong connection to the bush and is passionate about inspiring young women from regional areas. Through her own journey, she wants to highlight the many pathways STEM offers, showcasing roles that are hands-on, practical and capable of making a real impact.
