Dr Paige Erpf

Synthetic Biologist

Macquarie University/ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology is an innovative field that reimagines and redesigns biological systems for new purposes, and Paige is at the forefront of this research. As a synthetic biologist, she focuses on transforming ordinary yeast-typically used for beer and bread-into miniature cell factories that produce biofuels, plastics, and medicines. When she's not training yeast to tackle these incredible tasks, you might catch her chatting with lab mates about her latest novel, recent climbing trip, or upcoming snowboarding holiday.

Paige is a lover of storytelling and never shies away from sharing the exciting tales of her lab adventures or enthusiastically talking about the amazing things yeast can do. So much, that in 2023, she ventured into science comedy, making her debut at the Enmore Theatre Wildflower Bar and again at the Sydney Fringe Festival. Her performance gave a humorous glimpse into building the first synthetic genome, which was part of a global consortium. She also made a memorable appearance on the 2023 National Science Quiz, where she triumphed and dodged the dreaded slime.

Paige's passion for science and outreach shines through in everything she does, and she loves sharing her research and experiences with anyone who's interested.
