Dr Sarah Clement

Environmental scientist

Australian National University

Dr Sarah Clement is reimagining our relationship with nature in an era of unprecedented environmental change. Her interdisciplinary approach seeks innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges, including natural disasters, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

With a decade of practical experience in the US and Australia, Sarah's work blends academic rigor and real-world considerations. As an environmental scientist initially focused on technical fixes, she quickly realised the need to address human causes of ecological decline. She felt it important to see humans not just as problems, but also solutions, motivating her PhD on solutions to the biodiversity crisis. At University of Liverpool, she expanded focus to nature-based solutions~ specifically, how greening can tackle environmental challenges, as well as inequity and poverty in cities across the world. She returned to Australia to study bushfires, especially scientific debates about how prescribed burning is impacting biodiversity and climate adaptation.

Now an Associate Professor at the Australian National University's Fenner School of Environment and Society, Sarah continues the school's tradition of cross-disciplinary research and commitment to mentoring the next generation of environmental problem-solvers. She champions inclusion and diversity as chair of Fenner's IDEA committee, and teaches science students about environmental policy and sustainable urban systems.
