STA searches for Policy and Projects Officer

This new role presents an exciting opportunity to help shape the way in which the peak Australian science body influences and works with federal policy for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Science & Technology Australia represents more than 60,000 Australians who create and apply knowledge in every scientific and technological discipline. Its mission is to connect people in STEM with governments, businesses, and the community to enhance the role, reputation and impact of science and technology in Australia. We’re looking for the right person to help us enhance and consolidate our strong reputation for positively, proactively and strategically representing our sector as we engage with federal and state governments and parliamentarians.

The Policy and Projects Officer will develop and manage STA’s policy strategy, research and activities. The officer will work with the CEO, Communications and Engagement Manager, and STEM Sector Policy Committee to draft policy position statements and submissions to inquiries and consultations, and to strategically advise the STA Executive and Board regarding policy impacts for Australia’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics sectors.

The Policy and Projects Officer will also work with colleagues to create and manage programs to provide training and support to science and technology professionals to facilitate better relationships between the science sector and parliaments.

The successful candidate will join a small, talented and enthusiastic team, and will report to the Communications and Engagement Manager.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support the STA STEM Sector Policy Committee to create and update STA policy position papers
  2. Remain abreast of policy changes and political developments relevant to science and technology and advise STA leadership regarding appropriate responses
  3. Plan strategic activity to proactively engage the STEM sector on issues of political and policy significance to science and technology
  4. Prepare responses to relevant public inquiries, reviews and consultations;
  5. Help to develop and manage programs linking scientists and technologists with parliamentarians
  6. Assist with other projects where required, including but not limited to logistical, administrative and communications support.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Proven ability to take a strategic approach to successfully influencing government policy or decision-making.
  2. Highly developed communication skills, with experience preparing submissions to government inquiries, policy position statements and similar.
  3. An understanding of and enthusiasm for the science, technology, engineering and mathematics sector.
  4. Demonstrated ability to form and nurture successful relationships with a range of stakeholders.
  5. Demonstrated ability to perform well both independently and as a member of a small team.
  6. Outstanding attention to detail and time management, including an ability to juggle competing priorities and respond quickly and professionally as issues unfold.
  7. An understanding and commitment to the principals of diversity, fairness and equal opportunity.
