Dr Fleur Garton

NHMRC Early Career Postdoctoral Fellow

University of Queensland

Fleur is an NHMRC early career postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Queensland, Program in Complex Trait Genomics. She is an academic researcher with experience in neuromuscular and neurodegenerative fields. Fleur works with clinicians and researchers, locally and internationally to improve knowledge specific to motor neuron disease (MND).

Fleur's work is focussed on genetics and genomics. The discovery of the causes and mechanisms of MND, including aspects shared with other traits/diseases is now bumbling along with great gusto. This is due to the application of efficient sequencing technologies on ever increasing sample sizes. This rapidly evolving area is one that Fleur and her colleagues in are leaders and advocates for. She believes that this technology will help shape the future health and medical fields.

Fleur is passionate about translational research, diversity and inclusivity. She is a proactive community member always readily advocating for research. This includes taking part in charity rides from Brisbane to Sydney (Tour Duchenne) and Brisbane to Byron (MND&Me) (3x), has personally organised community events (Sydney and Brisbane) and raising over $50K for the community.

Prior to becoming a proud Brisbane local, Fleur completed her Bachelors (Hons I) and PhD (Molecular Genetics) at the University of Sydney. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne before receiving a fellowship to work at UQ.
