Job Purpose:

Science & Technology Australia is redesigning and growing our acclaimed Superstars of STEM program over the next two years with an increasing focus on cultural capability and reaching Indigenous people and other under-represented groups.

About the role

The ideal candidate will have a passion for science and technology and an interest in the media. They will have a deep understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in society and solid cultural capability.

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will be supported to build strong relationships with media outlets which service Indigenous communities and rural and remote areas. You will have the opportunity to help shape the redesign of the Superstars of STEM program and inspire more young people to choose STEM careers.

We will provide support and mentoring for you to grow and lead in this role. You will be joining a small inclusive team with a genuine passion for both improving diversity in the STEM workforce and for elevating Indigenous knowledges.

We are expanding our team. This exciting position is offered as full or part-time role based in our Canberra office.

Responsibilities:

  • Build strong relationships with media outlets, particularly Indigenous media outlets and those servicing rural and remote areas.
  • Assist with re-designing the Superstars of STEM program, including identifying new training facilitators and new opportunities for program participants.
  • Support the media training of program participants, including coordinate travel and event logistics for program participants as required.
  • Provide proactive and well organised administrative support to the program.
  • Other duties as required.

Main skills/ selection criteria:

  • Strong relationship building skills with the ability to nurture successful relationships with a range of stakeholders;
  • A deep understanding of the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and solid cultural capability;
  • Experience in or interest in learning about working with media organisations;
  • Outstanding attention to detail and time management, and an ability to juggle competing priorities and respond quickly and professionally as issues unfold;
  • Excellent administration skills or an interest in building them, including database management, correspondence, and event logistics;
  • Dedication and willingness to assist other staff across the STA team;
  • A passion for the STEM sector and a commitment to the principles of diversity, fairness, and equal opportunity.
