STA membership

Science & Technology Australia represent the interests of its members when advocating with government, engaging across research and industry, interacting with the STEM sector, and communicating with the public.

STA works hard to keep science and technology on the national agenda – working towards economic, environmental, health and social benefits for all Australians.

As the peak body of the Australian STEM sector, STA membership is open to Australian organisations representing, strongly interested in, or working in STEM.

Joining STA

Become part of a vibrant community of over 235,000 scientists and technologists representing more than 140 member organisations.

To become a member, complete the application form HERE. Your application must be supported by an existing STA member and receive approval from the STA Board. We can assist to find a nominating member, please contact members@sta.org.au

There is no joining fee; instead, the annual fee is determined by your organisation's type rather than its purpose.

If you are a scientist or technologist interested in participating in our programs and events, you must belong to an organisation that is a member of STA. You can find a list of our member organisations HERE.

If your organisation is not currently a member of STA, we encourage you to advocate for your society, association, or organisation to join us and be part of this dynamic network.

Membership categories

REPRESENTATIVE

Scientific societies and associations, unions and peak bodies.

Membership tier based on number of individuals represented (full financial members not including students, retired or overseas members) not number of organisations/subsidiaries etc.

Tier One >150 members$500$550
Tier Two 151-500 members $2,000$2,200
Tier Three 501-1000 members$5,000$5,500
Tier Four1000 plus members$8,000 $8,800 
ACADEMIC

Bodies that conduct, train, enable, support or facilitate academic research.

Including tertiary centres/institutes/faculties/business and executive units and research offices, research infrastructure organisations, ARC Centres of Excellence, CRC’s, etc.

Universities with 4 or more member institutions qualify for a blanket 5% discount.

Single tier $7,000 $7,700 
PRIVATE

Corporate bodies, SMEs and start-ups* that conduct, train, enable, support, facilitate and/or commercialise scientific research and technology.

*Start-ups in their first two years of operation are eligible to request a fee reduction, subject to Board approval.

Tier One >20 employees $5,000 $5,500 
Tier Two 21 – 200 employees $7,000 $7,700

Public knowledge institutions, departmental research agencies, science advisory bodies, funding bodies, regulatory bodies, statutory bodies.

COMMUNITY

Not for profits, charities and outreach providers.   

 Annual revenue Membership fee GST inclusive 
Tier One Less than $1M p/a $1,500 $1,650

Membership includes the opportunity to access government, research and industry decision-makers and be represented at key annual members-only events, including Science Meets Parliament, Parliamentary Friends of Science, STA member networking events and the STEM Ambassadors program.

Amplify your voice

Science & Technology Australia leads various programs and initiatives that affect the STEM sector and those who work across the sector. These include policy development and guidance, advocacy and public campaigns to support strategic and sustained investment in science and technology, conferences and forums, and professional development and networking opportunities for our members' members or employees.

STA Super STEM workshops discount

STA members are eligible to receive a 10% discount on all workshops included in STA's suite of professional development workshops.
