New bipartisan vision for Geoscience in Australia

Geological Map of Rodinga region of Nothern Territory

The Australian resource and geoscience sectors are evolving as researchers discover new and innovative ways to explore the earth and extract materials.

This work has been recognised by both the Federal Government and Opposition, who in recent announcements have separately pledged to boost the provision of data and support for exploration of ‘next generation’ hidden mineral deposits in Australia.

STA member, the Australian Geoscience Council, represents 8,000 geoscientists across the country. Their President, Dr Bill Shaw, said: “The road ahead is going to require more innovation and substantial lead-times in discovering and developing the resources that Australia and the world needs.”

“These must be found and extracted safely, cleanly and efficiently if we are to continue to support and maintain the community values that we expect in Australia.”

“The markets and competitive profile around the globe are always changing, and they impact on Australia’s mineral resources and export opportunities.

“We must have the knowledge to be able to plan and act strategically, and we are seeking a statement of bipartisan support to ensure the long-term vision is developed and implemented to sustainably maintain our resource industry and our lifestyle.”

You can read the full statement from the Australian Geoscience Council, learn more about their work via their website, or meet our other geoscience members.
