Dr Alex Russell

Dr Alex Russell is a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in the Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory at CQUniversity. He has worked in gambling research since 2011, covering a wide range of topics including gambling advertising, stigma, risk factors for gambling-related problems and social influences.

His primary focus is on how technology is changing gambling, including new ways to access existing products, and the emergence of new gambling products.

Alex completed his studies in the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney, and has worked on many different research topics, including studies into synaesthesia, childhood development, turkey mating, peaches and sleep. His PhD, completed in 2014, looked at how we learn to identify odours in wines.

Alex enjoys engaging with the public about STEM issues. He is often interviewed in the media about gambling-related issues, and has published in The Conversation and Cosmos Magazine. In 2019, he was an ABC Radio National Top 5 Scientist, and he also received both the Dean’s and Vice Chancellor’s Awards for Outstanding Research (Early Career).

Alex is particularly interested in training and supporting the STEM leaders of tomorrow, often taking on mentorship roles with Honours and Postgrad students.
