Microscopy Group Manager

Australian Synchrotron, ANSTO

Dr Emily Finch is the Microscopy Group Manager at ANSTO’s Australian Synchrotron. She works with her team to enable world-leading synchrotron microscopy research.

Emily loves using evidence to solve puzzles, which she has done in both research and science policy roles. Before joining ANSTO as a Beamline Scientist, Emily provided evidence-based policy advice as a Policy Analyst at the Academy of Technological Science and Engineering, and Senior Research and Policy Officer at The Australian Council of Learned Academies. She completed her PhD at Monash University and postdoctoral research at the Geological Survey of Western Australia, studying how metals move around Earth’s crust. These metals are crucial for green technologies like solar panels and wind turbines and Emily’s research helps to inform where to find them.

Emily enjoys making science accessible for everyone, and has shared science stories on television, radio, and podcasts, including ABC News Breakfast and Radio National’s Ockham’s Razor podcast. She created the website peopleofearthscience.com to highlight the diverse career paths available to people with earth science degrees.

Emily is an enthusiastic advocate for intersectional diversity and inclusion and is passionate about driving positive systemic change in STEM workplaces. She was Chair of the Australian Synchrotron Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and member of the Academy of Science’s EMCR Executive Committee, and the Geological Society of Australia’s Victorian Division Committee.

Dr Emily Finch is a Superstar of STEM.
