Dr Peter Howley
Associate Professor of Statistics in the Faculty of ScienceUniversity of Newcastle
Associate Professor of Statistics and Assistant Dean (Outreach) for UoN’s Faculty of Science, Peter is nationally and internationally recognised as a leader and award winning academic and practitioner in Statistics and STEM initiatives. Peter is the National Chair of Statistical Education, Statistical Society of Australia, member of National and International Advisory Boards for STEM initiatives, and Hunter Innovation and Science Hub Executive Board member.
Peter leads cross-disciplinary outreach initiatives and has established national and local support networks and collaborations uniting schools, academics, tertiary, government, industry and national organisations. Peter recently created Australia’s first Faculty of Science-led Integrated STEM postgraduate program at UoN. He has received over two million dollars in grants, an Office for Learning and Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, the 2017 International Statistical Institute’s Best Cooperative Project Award for his national STEM outreach initiative, which is also recognised in the Chief Scientist’s STEM Programme Index 2016, and the 2017 Faculty of Science Excellence in Collaboration Award at UoN. The latter recognised a project that united and developed his National Schools STEM initiative (www.ssaipostercomp.info) with Environmental Sustainability & Wollotuka Institute personnel; travelling to remote schools and producing improvements in student attitudes towards Statistics & Science.
