Superstars of STEM Mentor

Jeremy Brownlie is an Associate Professor of Genetics and Evolution at Griffith University. His research investigates how symbiotic bacteria, such as Wolbachia, shape insect biology and influence the spread of insect-borne diseases. Jeremy’s work has informed innovative approaches to pest and disease management, including strategies to control fruit fly populations in agriculture and reduce the transmission of mosquito-borne viruses.

Jeremy completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies at the Australian National University and CSIRO, followed by postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Queensland. He has held leadership roles within Griffith University, including Director of the Griffith Sciences Partnerships Office, where he led all external engagement for the sciences group and Deputy Head of the School of Environment and Science, with responsibility for learning, teaching, and international engagement. He has played a key role in building research collaborations between Griffith and local, national and international partners, focusing on global challenges in biotechnology, energy, food security, and drug discovery.

In addition to his research and teaching, Jeremy plays an active role in science policy and advocacy. He serves as a Council Member of the Prime Minister’s National Science and Technology Council and has previously held the position of President of Science and Technology Australia. Jeremy is dedicated to advancing scientific research, strengthening partnerships between universities and external organisations, connecting STEM professionals to parliamentarians, and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
