Maddie has just completed her final year of Engineering (Honours) and Economics student at the Australian National University. She majored in Electronic and Communication Systems and applied technical electronic skills in professional environment through working at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. This involved repairing production equipment like microphones and cameras to maintenance of broadcasting equipment and using signal processing. She has just started work as a Graduate Technology Consultant at Ernst and Young.
Maddie is passionate about removing barriers for those who are interested in STEM fields to make industry and academia inclusive and representative of the world we live in. She volunteered with and eventually led Fifty50, a student-led organization advocating for diversity in STEM. Maddie ran the largest iteration of its mentoring program and directed 30 students who volunteered with Fifty50to run its project and initiatives. She won the Glenn Dickins Scholarship for Engineering (2019) as recognition for her work.
In her final year, she completed a research project investigating cocoa bean drying methods for smallholder farmers in Papua New Guinea to improve their incomes. She developed a cocoa bean kiln and tested it using computational fluid dynamics software. In wanting to engage more people in Humanitarian Engineering she participated in the 2020 Undergraduate Project Presentation run by Engineers Australia and won 3rd Place and People’s Choice.
