Dr Sonu Yadav
Molecular biosecurity scientistNorthern Territory Government
DNA is everywhere - in our cells, the environment, and even on non-living surfaces. Sonu uses DNA-based techniques to identify species, study the invasion biology and genetic diversity of invasive species, and provide information crucial for preventing their entry and spread into Australia. Sonu's science career began with studying the genetics of mammals like tigers, and leopards. She walked through the dense forest of India, collecting tiger scat (yes, poop!) to estimate tiger populations. Even after being chased by elephants, her interest in science remained unwavering. Sonu earned her PhD in Biological Sciences, studying how specialist and generalist insects adapt and evolve in response to shifting climatic regimes and landscape changes.
After completing her PhD, Sonu explored the evolutionary history dingoes, uncovering answers to a long-standing question. She now focuses on biosecurity, working with even smaller organisms like bacteria, fungi and viruses. She works with industry partners, researchers, policy makers, university and school students to build a unified biosecurity system. Sonu is dedicated to advancing science education and STEM careers in remote and regional schools in Northern Australia, particularly among First Nations students. Sonu is passionate about fostering an enriched and sustainable environment for future generations and our biodiversity.
