Dr Steph Gardner

Marine Microbial Ecologist

University of New South Wales Sydney

As a marine microbial ecologist, Dr Gardner’s research investigates how microorganisms influence the health and function of tropical and polar reef systems. Steph is currently investigating microbes in benthic habitats in Antarctica, to characterise the biodiversity and complexity in the world’s most remote continent. Her research also spans physiology and biochemistry of corals, particularly a sulfur compound called dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and how corals can use this compound as an antioxidant to protect themselves against coral bleaching. As a Research Fellow at the University of Sydney, Dr Gardner is leading research on Antarctic marine microbial ecology as part of an Australian Research Council Special Research Initiative, Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future (https://arcsaef.com/).

Dr Steph Gardner is a Superstar of STEM.
