Science & Technology Australia (STA) has welcomed the Australian Government’s announcement that it will begin treaty negotiations on association to Horizon Europe, describing it as a major step forward for the nation’s research and innovation system.
The Government’s move, announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will open the door for Australian researchers and businesses to access one of the world’s largest research and innovation funding programs, worth more than $150 billion.
STA President Jas Chambers said the announcement represents a significant opportunity to strengthen Australia’s global research partnerships and economic competitiveness – but its success will depend on getting the policy settings right.
“This is a welcome and important step towards connecting Australia more deeply with the global research and innovation system. This is about more than just funding. It’s the opportunity to lead and shape global research agendas through collaboration,” Ms Chambers said.
“With the right investment and settings, Horizon Europe can help unlock new industries, create jobs, and ensure Australia is a leader – not a follower – in the technologies that will define our future.”
Ms Chambers said a comprehensive approach to formal association will be critical to strengthening Australia’s full research and innovation pipeline.
She said the Government’s announcement comes at a critical moment, following growing calls for reform through Ambitious Australia – the recently released report of the Strategic Examination of Research and Development.
“This is exactly the kind of bold, outward-looking action Australia needs at a time of rapid technological and economic change,” Ms Chambers said.
“But international collaboration must go hand-in-hand with domestic reform to ensure we’re translating research into real economic outcomes that are recognised across industries and sectors.”
